A good day

Our local Kiwanis Club sponsors an annual Junior Olympics for grades K-6.  It is held each year in May at our high school track, and some members of the high school track team are always there to assist with the events.  I really appreciate the Kiwanis Club for making this investment in our kids, but I also give props to the high school track team members who participate.  The students who are there each year enthusiastically volunteer their Saturday morning, and they seem to really enjoy working with the possible future members of the track team to follow in their shoes.  They are always very encouraging of all the kids, no matter their abilities.

The event was this Saturday, and the weather was perfect.  Dylan, Zachary and Lily participated this year, and both my parents and Jen's parents came to cheer on their Grandkids.  I was never an athlete in school, but I considered joining the track team, and I think I would have enjoyed it.  Jen was taking pictures, and I was supposed to be watching Ben.  At one point in the first competition (Zachary's long jump) I got so involved in cheering for Zachary and Blake (our Pastor's son), that I lost Benny.  There was a moment of panic until we spotted him climbing to the top of the bleachers.  Actually, Zachary spotted him and was yelling and pointing from the field, while waiting for his turn to jump.  Fortunately, the bleachers were enclosed by fencing, but there was still plenty of opportunity for a kid like Benny to get hurt.  That was my "wake up call"... I didn't lose Benny any more, when he was in my charge!

Zachary measured 9'-5" in the long jump, earning him the silver medal, just 3" short of gold.

Lily took the bronze medal in the standing jump.

This was Lily's first year to participate.

Zachary won the gold medal in the obstacle course.

Lily ran the 50M for a silver medal.

This was Dylan's last year to participate and he had a rough and disappointing day.  He signed up to run the 50M, the 100M and the 200M.  He ran the 50M first and pulled a muscle in his upper thigh just short of the finish line.  He was solidly in 2nd place when he pulled the muscle, but limped across the finish line in last place (4th), just seconds away from 3rd.  He limped off the track with a few tears in his eyes, in quite a bit of pain and disappointment, knowing he was out of the competition for the day.  He sat in the stands and watched as the other boys ran the 100M and 200M.

Zachary's third event was the 100M, earning him another silver medal.

If you look in the background of this photo, you'll see that Benny was not going to miss out on the running action.  He was getting restless, so Jen's Dad took him out to play on the other side of the field, during the last of the awards ceremony.  At this point, he got away, and ran for freedom across the field.  Here you see him ahead of my Father-In-Law, and about to be cut off by Zachary.

Jen's parent's treated us to lunch at Arby's afterwards and I came home and spent the afternoon working on the final trim needed for the living room to be ready for the soon-to-be-installed carpet.  I knocked off at dinner time.  After dinner, Benny and I took a nice walk to a local park to play and to scout a possible geocache hiding spot.

Early that evening, I casually mentioned that it looked like a good night for sleeping in the tent. I wasn't really serious about doing it, but Zachary latched onto that and really wanted to. Jen wisely reminded me that I shouldn't "put it out there" if I wasn't serious. She was right, so I grabbed the 8 x10 (we own four different tents of various sizes), which goes up quickly. We popped it up in the backyard, grabbed some sleeping pads and bags, and built a backyard fire. After all this, I checked the forecast... mid 40's for the low. Chilly, but the mummy bags can handle that. The last time we tried to camp with Benny, he didn't do so well with sleeping in the tent. Jen suggested that I include him in our "guys night" to see how he would do. I didn't think he'd like a mummy bag, so I put him in a kid-sized rectangular, in his footed fleece sleeper and a fleece hat, with an extra blanket over him. He slept solidly until about 5 AM, when he woke up toasty warm, but wanting Mama. I could have probably got him back to sleep, but he was making a rucus and I didn't want to wake the neighbors, so we all four just grabbed our pillows and went to the house for the last few hours of the morning.

It was one of those Saturdays when it was a good day to be a Dad!

a day on the lake

I had a real weekend this past week... Saturday AND Sunday off!  That hasn't happened too many times in the past year.  I originally requested it because Jen, in a moment of insanity, planned to go camping Friday through Sunday with her parents, who were camped on a waterfront site at a local state park.  Remembering the effort of packing for a family of six and camping with Benny (at the same park) this time last year, her better judgement returned, and she decided to just make it a day trip on Saturday.

Lily took her bike, which she recently learned to ride without training wheels, and Grandpa helped her with some fishing.  Zachary took his bike and his fishing gear.  Dylan took his fishing gear and a favorite book.  The four adults took turns keeping Benny out of the water... and the road... and the neighbor's campsites... you get the picture!

The state park had canoe, kayak, and pedal boat rentals... hourly or daily.  The boys had asked me to rent a pedal boat on other occasions, and (being the cheapskate that I am) I had never rented one.  At Jen's suggestion, I went to the concession to price the rentals... $10 per hour or $40 per day.  I asked if I could exchange boats throughout the day if I paid for the daily rental, and they agreed, so (at the suggestion of my wife) I splurged and paid for the daily rental.  The boy's excitement was priceless... sometimes it's the simple things.

I have wanted a kayak for a while, but I have other priorities.  Do you see a theme here... (being the cheapskate that I am)?  I had never actually used a kayak, so I started out the day with a single person.  It wasn't exactly the style of kayak that I want, but it was good enough to get the idea.

I paddled around for a while, then let the kids try it out.  I hooked a rope to it at first (training wheels for a kayak), making sure they would be able to maneuver it a little way from the shore and back to me, before turning them loose to go a little further into the inlet.  Dylan and Zachary passed the test and I let them paddle independently (but close to the campsite).

Jen tried it out, and liked it... which is a plus if I ever actually decide to purchase a kayak, or two.  Of course, I would need to sell my canoe first, and apply that to the purchase of a kayak.

I asked Lily if she wanted to try.  Of course, she, who never backs down from a challenge, enthusiastically said yes.  I didn't let her off the rope, but she handled it pretty impressively for her size.

Dylan's perfect day... fishing and reading.

After we had our fun with the kayak, I exchanged it for a five person pedal boat.  The boys were so excited.  I'm not sure how many miles they pedaled on the lake that day, but they were in that boat almost the whole day.  I'd say they got my money's worth.

We cruised the lake

The Farmer's Insurance blimp flew over the lake

They used it as their bass boat

more fishing

more cruising

Lily caught several fish with Grandpa's help.  I think she might be "hooked" on fishing.  Sunday afternoon she was telling me, "Daddy, I need a tackle box... and a jar to put worms in."  She can be a girlie girl, but she's not afraid to keep up with a house full of boys!  I guess I need to be learning how to fish.

4 nights for the price of 7

Having recently started a new job, I have no vacation time this year. Therefore, we decided to get away for a week to a state park near enough to work that I could go from there. Being veteran campers with young children, we made reservations and paid for seven nights. We lasted four!

Benny, being a lover of the outdoors, was surprisingly found to be a creature of habit who did not do well sleeping in a tent, away from his normal surroundings.

Lily, not really liking the outdoors, was not a fan of camping and spent much of the time bored and moody.

I, needing a decent amount of sleep each night to get up and go to work each morning, was growing more and more irritated by the fact that the twenty, or so, people on the two campsites next to us insisted on being extremely noisy until about 2 AM every night.

Jen, essentially a single mom camping with four kids, was running out of steam after part of a week.

Zachary, being an eczema sufferer, was having a great time but his skin was a mess from the lack of his daily home bath/ lotion regimen.

Dylan, being an avid fisherman, was having a blast.

It looks good in pictures, but it was not one of our better trips. We sacrificed three nights of camping fees, but it was good to be home… at least Jen and I thought so.

When's our next camping trip planned?  Well... anybody wanna buy a tent?

Camping... sort of!

It's been a pretty long winter, and we are ready to move on. We are looking forward to some camping weather to return. Now that our family is larger, we either need to invest in a larger tent, or boot someone out! I chose the latter option. An important part of camping is setting up, tearing down, and maintaining your gear. Dylan and Zachary are getting old enough to start learning about this as they move out "on their own".

Knowing this, Jen's Aunt Patty and Uncle Kenny got the boys their very own tent for Christmas. What fun is a tent for Christmas when you can't use it for at least 5 more months? We fixed that this weekend! I am finished (I think) with all the framing modifications and repairs to the "work" side of the house and I have the area cleaned up and awaiting the building inspector's visit. Last night, we took advantage of the empty, unfinished living room and camped out... in! We're planning to make it a two night stay!

Intro to Camping

Part of our Labor Day weekend was spent camping with my Mom and Dad, and my brother and his family, in Mom and Dad's backyard. We didn't need any reservations, camp wasn't full, and the price was great! This was Lily's first taste of camping and she loved it! Here are some pictures to enjoy.
She thought the whole experience of tent and sleeping bag was a hoot! She was telling everyone the next day, "I slept in the tent".

Saturday morning, I put the kids to work helping get Grandpa's wood pile in shape.
Lily thought she was really cool getting to help Daddy drive Grandpa's tractor.

Lily always likes to be a part of the action. Here she is helping Uncle Dave put his camper down.
